Cough etiquette: The ideal way to practice good hygiene

If there were ever an ideal time to implement good hygiene etiquette, it’s now. 


A hard-bitten cold and flu season have put most of us at great risk. And the risk of COVID-19 is enough to make the most restful person lose their cool. 


But rest assured, there are courteous, considerate, and safe ways to handle your symptoms, while also shielding those around you.   


Here’s what you require to know if you find yourself coughing or sneezing in public. 


How to secure others from getting sick, too   

If you’re coughing or sneezing in public, especially in a healthcare space like a waiting room or the ER, you may be questioned to wear a mask. Try not to be annoyed with this – it’s for everyone’s safety, including your own. 


If you’re not putting up a mask, follow these guidelines: 


Use a tissue paper to cover your mouth and nose every minute you cough or sneeze. (Utilize to coughing into your elbow if a tissue is not available. Avoid coughing into your hands or open air.) 

For good and all, turn your face away from people around you when coughing or sneezing. 

Place your used tissue quickly in the trash can. 

Rinse your hands with soap or hand washes and water or use an alcohol-based or herbal hand sanitizer that holds at least 60 to 95% alcohol after you cough or sneeze. 

When you cough into the air, you can send germs as far as 3 to 6 feet in front of you. And if you cough into your hands, you could pass on germs from place to place when you touch something else. 


Serious respiratory viruses are usually escalated by unclean hands and touching your face after touching infected surfaces. So it’s very significant to wash your hands and to always mask your cough or sneeze. 


More sterility etiquette tips for when you’re unwell: 


  • Clean your hands often. (We’re talking multiple times a day!) 

  • Avoid touching your mouth, nose, eyes, or ears. If you do, quickly wash your hands.   

  • Disinfect surfaces you may have coughed on or touched with infected hands. 

  • Hold back from shaking hands, kissing, or hugging if you’re sick.    

  • Keep at arm’s length of healthy people around you, mainly those with a weakened immune system or anyone with heart or lung problems. 

  • And if you’re feeling not be oneself – have the goodness to stay home (or keep your kids home from school). You’ll be performing your part if you stay home and rest. Don’t pull the germs into public with you.
